What to wear for a Hawaii wedding is mostly about the weather. With an average temperature of 80 degrees year round, choose cool fabrics. Cotton works well. You may want to wait until arriving in Hawaii to purchase your wedding attire. Those living in the Islands are familiar with what fabrics work best and what styles are currently popular.
Brides:
Traditional Hawaiian Wedding Dresses are called holoku and are mumu-like. The traditional color is white with a white pattern embossed onto the dress. Today’s holoku are fitted, strapless or with thin straps and resemble other wedding dresses. For beach weddings, almost anything goes. Don’t be afraid to choose a Hawaiian print sarong or a short, colorful dress. If you choose a sarong, be sure you know how to tie it. You can find instructions for tying sarongs on-line or a clerk in a local shop can show you how. Give your dress or sarong a trial run before the wedding. Remember, it can be windy at the beach and you don’t want your dress flying open in the breeze! Some brides like to wear a dress that matches the groom’s hawaiian print shirt. You can find matching sets in many shops on the Islands or on-line. Choose a dress that reflects your style and most of all, one that you feel fabulous in. Go barefoot in the sand if you like.
Grooms:
The groom should dress according to the climate, the location of the wedding, and the bride’s dress. If your bride is wearing a formal wedding gown, you may want to wear a tux or a suit and tie. If you are having a beach wedding and she is wearing a Hawaiian sarong or a short, more casual dress, wearing an Aloha shirt and a pair of light linen pants is perfect. Some grooms wear dressy shorts and a Hawaiian shirt. Wear what you and your bride are comfortable with.
This is your special Hawaiian Wedding day. Do it the way the two of you choose!
